2020 Director Candidates

Northern Savings, like all credit unions, is a member-owned financial co-operative built on the principle of acting in the best interest of our members through a democratically elected Board of Directors.

You're more than a member, you are an owner and you can define the future of Northern Savings by voting for your Board of Directors.

This year, there are three director seats on Northern Savings' Board

  • One Director At Large seat
  • One Prince Rupert seat
  • One Terrace seat

Voting Expand/Collapse

For the 2020 election we will be moving to online voting, which allows us to reduce our environmental impact, while providing members with a convenient and confidential method of casting their vote. Our third party provider, CUES, offers a secure and easy-to-use system.

How to vote Expand/Collapse

Voting instructions will be sent to all eligible voting members through a secure message via our online banking system on Friday, March 27. To access your message follow these steps:

  • Login in to your Northern Savings account through online banking
  • Click on "Messages and Alerts"
  • Click on "View Messages"
  • Select the message with the following subject line: "Board of Directors and Special Resolution Voting Instructions"
  • Review the message and click on the "Vote Now" link to cast your vote

If you do not receive the message on March 27 and believe you are an eligible voter, contact your branch and our staff can assist you.

When to vote Expand/Collapse

Cast your vote between March 27 and April 8, 2020 (2:30pm PST).

Business members and voting Expand/Collapse

To vote as a business member, the business will be required to designate a non-member to vote on behalf of the organization.

Once the form has been completed and received back, we will contact the designated voter with login credentials to access the election. 

We recommend all completed designation forms be emailed back to us no later than Friday, April 3 in order to ensure voting credentials are assigned to the voter.

Special Resolution Expand/Collapse

In addition to the Director election, members will be asked to vote on a special resolution which seeks to reduce the current adult member equity share requirement from $25.00 to $5.00. You can review the resolution here >

I have 43 years banking experience having worked 41 of those years for Northern Savings Credit Union and circa 2 years for North Peace and Savings Credit Union.  My experience as an Executive Management team member in both credit unions; together with 30 plus years of volunteering in various Health and Community Boards, and two terms on City Council places me in a uniquely qualified position to meet all of the requirements the Board is seeking. I would be pleased and honoured to serve on the Board of Northern Savings Credit Union.

As the recent Chair of the Board I have played a role in achieving stability at Northern Savings and establishing a clear direction going forward that focuses on our members.  As a lifelong member of Northern Savings, I believe in member-value where members feel confident that their best interests are always first and foremost in any decision or initiative.  My personal values are strongly aligned with the credit union’s vision and mission and I will continue to adhere to these principals.  I value your continued support and would be proud to continue to serve as a director with Northern Savings.

I am completing my fifth year on the Northern Savings Credit Union Board. I hold an Accredited Director (Acc. Dir.) designation and have served on Governance Committees for a number of organizations. I have over 40 years of accounting, financial and general business management experience and have been involved in a wide range of industries including forest products, logging, road maintenance, retail/wholesale and media including serving as Vice-President, Finance for a large regional British Columbia media group. I currently operate CFR Management Inc., providing financial/business management services to small and medium-sized businesses and not-for-profits.

About Sylvan Expand/Collapse

I would like to continue to serve on the Board of Directors for Northern Savings Credit Union. I have taken extensive training for this in my short term as a Director, and I have attended every meeting of the Board and all my Committee meetings. As Superintendent of Public Works in my small town, I enjoy being part of a collaborative decision making process, while also implementing the vision of the Mayor and Council. I am a strong believer in Union’s and Cooperatives. As a volunteer firefighter, rugby coach and math tutor, I believe in giving back to the community.

I am a retired educator. My level of education is M.A.B.Ed and 3 years of C.G.A (Certified General Accountant).  I have been a resident of Terrace for over 50 years and a life-long member of the local credit union.  I had the privilege of serving on the boards of Terrace & District Credit Union (2003-2006) and Northern Savings Credit Union (2006-2016).  This provided me a great opportunity and knowledge about the banking industry. My understanding of governance was enriched by completing the relevant courses. I also became a firm believer of the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People”.

My interest in serving on Northern Savings’ Board centers on the excellent service I have received over many years, directly motivating me to apply! As background, I have served on many local non-profit boards, from Hospice to the College, have extensive management training (PhD) and recently led a variety of workshops on effective Board Governance at Coast Mountain College.
