Annual General Meeting

Our AGM will be taking place on Wednesday, April 10 at the Crest Hotel in Prince Rupert. We will not be holding our membership meetings in April this year; instead, each community will have a member event at a later date - which will include a meet-and-greet with our CEO.

2019 Director Nominees

Northern Savings, like all credit unions, is a member-owned financial institution built on the principle of acting in the best interest of our members through a democratically elected Board of Directors. Our membership plays an integral role in choosing the people who work with Credit Union management to define the future direction of our organization.

The Board provides critical guidance and oversight by: determining strategic direction, setting policies, working with management to maximize the Credit Union’s financial performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements, and representing members’ interests.

In 2019, there are five director vacancies on Northern Savings’ Board of Directors. Based on the Rule changes approved by the membership in 2017, four of the five seats will be filled by Directors-at-Large. This means, four seats will be filled by any qualifying Northern Savings member in good-standing, regardless of where their home branch is.

The fifth seat available on Northern Savings’ Board in 2019 is a seat designated for the Queen Charlotte area. As there was only one nomination received for the Queen Charlotte area, this seat will be filled by acclamation; Trent Moraes will be returning for a three-year term.

The 2019 candidates are listed below and voting will be available either through mail-in ballot or in-branch voting.

Mail-In Ballots

All eligible members were sent mail-in ballots the first week of February. Mail-in ballots must be returned by March 8, 2019. Check out the mail-in ballot package >

In-Branch Voting

In-branch voting will take place on March 13, 14, and 15. All eligible members who did not submit a mail-in ballot can vote at any of our branches during this time.

I would like to serve on the Board of Directors for Northern Savings Credit Union. As Superintendent of Public Works in my small town, I enjoy being part of a collaborative decision-making process; but also implementing the vision of the Mayor and Council. I am a strong believer in unions and co-operatives; I believe that a good union helps both the workers and the business that they work for; a good co-operative helps the customers that it serves, while enriching the community. As a volunteer firefighter, coach (rugby) and math tutor, I believe in giving back to the community.

One of my strengths is to walk into a discussion or a meeting with an open mind, discuss options and after consideration form an opinion. I deal in facts; I am in business and know how to market a product. Serving 28 years in the Canadian Military has moulded me into a team player. I make decisions based on fact and financial sense. The military engrained the value of being a team player. Most of my military career was in leadership and or management roles. I utilize skills and expertise of others to aid my decision process. Owning and operating a business has developed my understanding of what it takes to be successful. The importance of decisions based on fact while recognizing customer needs and most important customer service. I always strive to be better than the competition.

I presently serve on the Co-op Board and Gwaii Trust as a director and as a town councilor, I am well versed in the operations of boards. I believe in and support community-based business.

For the last ten years working in management for the Container Terminal I have overseen or developed auditing and compliance programs. I regularly review and build financial documents for a billion dollar operation. Through my roles, I have demonstrated an ability to think critically and strategically along with considering impact to our community. My role places me in the community often at speaking engagements and information sessions. I believe in our community, I respect the Credit Union movement; I coach sports here and volunteer with School District 52 doing career prep for students. I currently sit on and have sat on Director boards that have similar principles to Northern Savings Credit Union and these principles are the main reasons why I want to contribute to Northern Savings and the members.
